Frankfurt International Airport has been awarded the title of the seventh most connected airport in the world, according to the OAG Megahubs Index 2026.

Istanbul is home to the most connected airport in 2026

The OAG Megahubs Index 2026 compares the 100 largest airports and international airports worldwide, based on the number of available flight seats in the 12-month period leading up to the busiest aviation day on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Airports are analysed to calculate the number of possible connections within six hours, looking at inbound, outbound or international flights.

Istanbul Airport overtook London Heathrow Airport to become the best-connected airport in the world in 2026, with a total of 89.456 connections and 337 destinations. London Heathrow Airport followed in second place, and Amsterdam Schiphol in third.

While European airports occupied the top three international megahubs, Asia Pacific continues to gain ground, claiming eight of the top 20 spots compared to six for EMEA.

Frankfurt falls 3 spots but remains in top 10

Despite falling three spots compared to 2025, Frankfurt International Airport still made it into the top 10 airport megahubs in the world. The German airport ranked seventh, with 67.703 connections to 310 destinations. Unsurprisingly, Lufthansa AG is the dominant airline, operating 53 percent of all flights.

Among European hubs, Frankfurt climbs to fourth place, while Munich International Airport rounds out the European top 10 in ninth place (23rd globally).
