More tourists came to Germany in the first half of 2025 than during any single six-month period before. Unable to live up to the highs of Euro 2024 madness, Berlin was the only city which saw a year-on-year decline.

Record tourist numbers in Germany in 2025

A record number of tourists visited Germany in the first six months of 2025. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there were 223,3 million tourism overnight stays in the federal republic between January and June.

This is a 0,1 percent increase on the previous record, which was set in the first half of 2024, when Germany hosted the European football championships.

Who has been visiting us? While there was a year-on-year decline in the number of international tourists visiting Germany in the first half of this year, domestic tourism increased by 7,4 percent. 42,8 million residents and citizens of Germany chose to explore and stay overnight in another part of the country between January and July.

Fewer tourists are visiting Berlin

Berlin bucked the upward trend. In the first half of 2025, six million tourists stayed overnight in the German capital, 100.000 fewer than during the same period last year.

While the number of domestic tourists to Berlin remained stable, overnight stays were less popular among international tourists. Around 2,1 million international tourists have visited the capital so far this year and booked a total of 5,6 million overnight stays, 4,7 percent fewer than during the same period last year.

Domestic or international, tourists to Berlin are also changing their travel habits; hostels recorded half a million fewer overnight stays compared to 2024.
