A new survey from Aral has revealed up-to-date information about Germany’s coffee drinking habits. How many cups does the country drink per day, and what is the brew of choice?

New survey reveals Germany’s coffee drinking habits

Published for International Coffee Day on October 1, a new survey has revealed up-to-date facts about coffee drinking habits in Germany. A whopping 92 percent of respondents said they drink coffee regularly, and 68 percent drink it every day.

The majority - 62 percent - said that they drink coffee between two and three times per day. A third of respondents reported indulging in four or more cups per day! And one kind of coffee rules the roost: filter coffee.

44 percent of respondents regularly drink filter coffee, compared to the 38 percent who opt for a cappuccino, 33 percent for a cafe crema, 30 percent for a Milchkaffee and 26 percent for a latte macchiato. Espresso was the least favoured coffee choice, with 22 percent saying they shot one regularly.

Respondents also had different milk preferences, with 38 percent opting for full-fat milk with their brew and 26 percent for semi-skimmed milk. Among respondents under 35 years old, almost a quarter reported drinking their coffee with a plant-based milk.

A quarter said they drank their coffee black, and 60 percent don’t add sugar. The survey also found that men are more likely to add sugar to their coffee than women.

Eastern federal states love their coffee the most

The study also revealed geographical differences, namely that residents of the eastern federal states are heavier coffee drinkers than those in western states.

73 percent of respondents in eastern federal states reported drinking a coffee every day, compared to 70 percent in western states, 67 percent in northern states and 64 percent in southern states.

Of all coffee drinkers, more than half said that their morning cup wasn’t just about getting their caffeine fix, but also had an “emotional dimension” as an “important daily ritual that shouldn’t be missed out on”.
