Germany has outdone itself in the latest Michelin Guide awards. In 2025, restaurants in the federal republic have more collective stars than ever before.

341 German restaurants now have Michelin stars

The last bite was eaten, the dishes were done, and the 2025 Michelin Guide is out; more restaurants than ever before in Germany have at least one Michelin star.

341 establishments across the country are included in the 2025 guide, compared to the 340 which made it in last year. In 2025, just 12 German restaurants have three Michelin stars, with two added to the prestigious list this year, Restaurant Haelin in Hamburg and Tohru in der Schreiberei in Munich

In total, 47 German restaurants hold two Michelin stars, with five new additions in 2025; Gotthardt’s and Intense (Rhineland-Palatinate), ATAMA (Saarland), Oswald’s Gourmetstube (Bavaria), and Pietsch (Saxony-Anhalt). A whopping 282 restaurants have one star, with 30 new additions in 2025.

What are Michelin reviewers looking for in a star restaurant?

Earning a Michelin star is famously difficult, and keeping one is difficult too. 33 German restaurants lost their stars in 2025. So, what are anonymous reviewers looking for?

Michelin reviewers behave like any other customer and receive the same service as any of us would. During their anonymous restaurant visit, they assess the quality of the ingredients, the “mastery of culinary techniques”, flavour harmony, how the chef’s “personality” is conveyed through the food, and how consistent the quality is.

When the Michelin Guide expanded from France to include Germany in 1966, the restaurant in Schwarzwald Hotel Adler was the first German establishment to be given a star.
