Munich local authorities are inviting residents to submit ideas on how to improve the city. All residents can vote for their favourite submission, and winning projects will be fully funded.
Munich to fund residents’ city development ideas
Local authorities in Munich have announced a new scheme called “The Munich Budget”. The city is encouraging all residents, including international residents, to submit their ideas about how the Bavarian capital can be improved.
Anyone over the age of 14 can submit a proposal in German or English, suggesting any kind of project, from building more public toilets and picnic tables to outdoor libraries. Projects should be submitted by June 9, can cost a maximum of 100.000 euros, but shouldn’t disrupt conservation areas or require the city to hire permanent employees.
The new scheme will run for three years and was inspired by similar budget proposal projects in Paris and Barcelona.
All Munich residents can vote on submissions for city improvement
Once projects have been submitted, between June 17 and 30, all local residents will be able to vote for their favourite project. When the first round of voting closes, local authorities will assess the financial feasibility of the preferred projects.
Projects that pass this stage will face a second voting round between October 15 and 31, during which residents will choose which projects to fund. With a total budget of 1 million euros, the number of projects that come to fruition will depend on the cost of each selected project.
