Looking for a post-Christmas tipple? Or somewhere stylish to spend Silvester? According to a new magazine award, these are some of the best cocktail bars in Berlin.
Every year, the magazine Mixology picks its selection of the best cocktail bars in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, focusing on bartenders’ mixology skills to award the Mixology Bar Award to those whose creations impress and surprise.
Berlin might be better known for its low-key establishments serving up cheap German beer, but plenty of places in the city do cocktails, and a fair few of them appear on Mixology’s awards list for 2023.
Wax On, located midway between Alt-Treptow, Kreuzberg and trendy Neukӧlln on Westerstrasse, was named New Bar of the Year. Wax On specialises in classic cocktails with a twist: whether you fancy an Old Fashioned with peanut butter and strawberry, or a Gimlet with lemon verbena and vetiver. Rose-Manon Baux, who works as a bartender at Wax On, was also named Newcomer of the Year.
Another bar in Neukӧlln, Velvet, took the title of Bar of the Year for the second time, having already claimed the accolade in 2019. Velvet’s menu is centred around locally foraged plants, including specialities like their cocktail flavoured with delicate cherry blossom and saffron. Kink in Prenzlauer Berg won the titles Restaurant-Bar of the Year and Bar Team of the Year.
