About this role

Role - Engineering Manager for the B2B Portal and Portal Application team at Zalando. Lead a cross‑functional team of up to 10 engineers (frontend and backend) to build and maintain a high‑performance, modular portal that serves as the single point of entry for partners. Collaborate with UX designers, Product Managers and Principal Engineers. Responsibilities - Define and drive full‑stack strategy, shaping scalable modular portal architecture (frontend & backend). - Hire, mentor and grow a diverse team of 5 frontend and 5 backend engineers. - Translate user needs into technical roadmaps together with Product and UX leads, leveraging design systems. - Own portal backend infrastructure, deployments, scalability, uptime and data flows, as well as frontend performance and CI/CD. - Ensure operational health: monitor performance, maintain security (Okta/OpenID), SEO‑friendly architecture, and CI/CD pipelines. - Guide architectural decisions around Micro Frontends, SPA performance and API design. - Promote Agile best practices, remove blockers and align stakeholders on roadmap and release cycles. Qualifications - 5+ years experience leading engineering teams, building high‑trust cultures in an international setting. - Strong full‑stack expertise: modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and backend systems (Java/Kotlin, databases, messaging), with deep knowledge of Micro Frontend architectures. - Proven experience designing, operating, and scaling backend services and REST APIs; hands‑on with cloud‑native deployments (AWS, Kubernetes). - Ability to manage mixed frontend/backend teams and make trade‑offs across the stack. - DevOps mindset: focus on build times, automated testing, reliability and zero‑downtime deployments. - User‑centric perspective and ability to translate business requirements into clean, scalable software. - Strong coaching and people‑development skills.
