Senior Applied Scientist - Logistics Algorithms (all genders)

Role: Senior Applied Scientist – algorithmic research‑driven software development in Zalando's logistics team, focusing on predictive warehousing, scheduling, planning and routing decisions using stochastic optimization. Responsibilities: - Drive research, design, and implementation of algorithms and predictive models. - Deliver end‑to‑end solutions, from research and prototyping to production software and operation of highly available systems. - Influence research and development methodologies to foster a scalable, data‑driven architecture. - Support and coach other Applied Scientists by sharing knowledge and expertise. - Collaborate with engineers, product owners, and cross‑functional teams. Qualifications: - Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field. - Minimum 6 years of applied research experience in algorithmic software development. - Industry experience with Java, Kotlin, Python or similar languages. - Proven ability to translate business problems into mathematical models and solve them with state‑of‑the‑art methods. - Expertise in at least one area: advanced algorithmic techniques (e.g., combinatorics, graph theory, control theory), mathematical modeling (operations research, statistics, experimentation), or machine learning (forecasting, Bayesian networks). - Strong autonomy and ability to collaborate in an agile, cross‑functional environment.
