Bundeswehr begins training exercise at Jungfernheide U-Bahn
The guards battalion of the Federal Department of Defence will use the U-Bahn station Jungfernheide for a training exercise between November 17 and 21, the Bundeswehr has announced.
The special battalion is responsible for protecting the government buildings in an emergency. During the exercise, trainees will learn how to move in underground facilities and fight their way through transport routes, according to a report from Berlin and Brandenburg public broadcaster rbb.
Exercises will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night between 1am and 4am. As a result, people in the area surrounding the U-Bahn station may see snipers, but do not need to worry about an unfolding emergency. No live ammunition will be used during the training exercise.
Further exercises planned in Rüdersdorf and Ruhleben
At Jungfernheide U-Bahn station, the military exercises will take place on a specially designated “catastrophe protection exercise" platform built at the station in 2003. The platform is regularly used for training emergency services personnel.
During the week, further training will take place at the so-called “Fighting City” training ground for police in the western Berlin district of Ruhleben, where soldiers will be trained in searching buildings, how to detain enemy forces and defend infrastructure.
In Rüdersdorf, which lies over the southeastern border in Brandenburg, exercises will take place at a former chemical plant.
