BVG unveils “one of” the longest trams in the world in Berlin

Berlin’s local public transport association has unveiled a new tram for the city. The so-called Urbanliner is one of the longest trams in the world.
BVG unveils new 50-metre-long tram in Berlin
The local transport association in Berlin, the BVG, has unveiled a new 50,9 metre-long tram in the capital. The Urbanliner can fit a total of 312 passengers, with sitting space for 92.
Once it officially hits the tracks in 2025, the Urbanliner will run on the M4 tram line between Falkenberg and Hackesher Markt, a 36-minute route stretching 11,4 kilometres. 18 trams will run on the route every hour, transporting around 100.000 passengers each day.
Speaking at the tram unveiling, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said the Urbanliner would better connect the outskirts to the city centre and ensure “Berlin can stay liveable and fit for the future,” according to a BVG press release.
The design of the tram follows the same design inspired by Bauhaus of existing Berlin trams but with some extra, fancy lighting features.

Where is the longest tram in the world?
While the Urbanliner is a feat for Berlin, the new tram isn’t the longest tram in Germany nor the longest in the world, both of those titles belong to Mannheim.
When Škoda unveiled its new 58,7-metre-long ForCity Smart 38T tram in March 2024, which was built for the RNV public transport association operating in Rhine-Neckar, the city in Baden-Württemberg took over the title of home to the longest tram in Germany and the world!
