The lesser-known German supermarket, Tegut, is set to close 50 additional shops across the country, including in the supermarket’s “heartland”. 35 shop closures were already announced in 2024.

Tegut announces more supermarket closures

According to a report in the Lebensmittel Zeitung, the German supermarket chain Tegut is to close 50 more shops. There are only 314 branches of Tegut across the country, and the company already announced 35 shop closures in 2024.

The German supermarket operates in Hesse, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony. Closures are also expected in the Rhein-Main region, considered the "heartland" of Tegut stores. Further details of affected stores are yet to be announced.

Changes ongoing at Tegut parent company

Originally opened in 1947, Tegut was bought by Switzerland’s largest retail company, Migros, in 2013. Migros recorded a 55 million Swiss franc (59,6 million euros) loss in 2024, and the 50 additional Tegut store closures are part of wider operational changes at the company.

In 2024 and 2025, Migros has sold off many of its subsidiary companies in Switzerland, including m-electronics, which was taken over by Germany’s MediaMarkt, SportXX, Hotelplan, Bike World, Obi and Mibelle.

As a consequence, between January and October 2024, around 6.500 Migros employees were reassigned and 1.500 lost their jobs. Tegut's parent company hopes that selling off subsidiaries it deems unprofitable will allow the brand to expand and cut prices at the Migros supermarket chain in Switzerland, the company’s main venture.
