Various locations, Elbe Islands

For the last 10 years, on the second weekend of June, the Wilhelmsburg community centre has staged the 48h Wilhelmsburg festival. Taking place at everyday locations around the Wilhelmsburg and Veddel districts of Hamburg, this event aims to shine a light on the musical prowess of these Elbe islands.

What is 48h Wilhelmsburg?

48h Wilhelmsburg is not a music festival in the classic sense. Organised entirely by the Wilhelmsburg community, this festival is one that is truly of the people, by the people and for the people in every aspect. Thus, this festival aims to achieve a self-determined cultural district development with all interested residents.

Moreover, it also promotes intercultural exchange among musicians, residents and attendees through music, which functions as a universal language without barriers.

What to expect at 48h Wilhelsmburg

During the festival, participants aim to present their districts just as they would appear throughout the rest of the year. For this reason, events do not take place in festival tents, concert halls or any other types of classical stages, but rather in areas of the island that people pass by every day, but often overlook.

Regardless of genre or origin, the festival showcases music on the island in its entirety, with traditional, classical and modern music given equal standing - Turkish, Iranian, Spanish, reggae, rap, rock, you name it, Wilhelmsburg's got it!

This year, however, due to coronavirus restrictions, the events will take place online.

Digital programme

The digital programme of 48h Wilhelmsburg consists of recorded concerts that are broadcast both on the website of the festival, and on TIDE TV. Although places and musicians cannot be brought together in the traditional sense, they will do so online through a short interview before the performance, during which the musicians and location will be introduced.

This year’s show consists of both musical performances as well as a podcast, featuring music and conversations about the musical and cultural diversity of the Hamburg Elbe Islands.

Usually, you can support the musicians by leaving money in a hat or at a bar. This year, you will still be able to continue that tradition and help those who are suffering severe financial losses due to the coronavirus outbreak, through a simple online donation form.

Attending 48h Wilhelmsburg

You can attend 48h Wilhelmsburg, either as a performer, or as one of the audience. To register as a performer, you must have a clear connection with the Elbe Islands - i.e. you live, work, or rehearse there.

As an audience member, you can watch the performances from the comfort of your home – either through the website or on TIDE TV – as long as you have a working internet connection.

For an overview of the performances and locations, and well as more information about the registration requirements, visit the mvde website.
