A whole continent of creativity awaits those who visit the Africa Festival in Stuttgart this year, with music and dance performances, as well as art and fashion exhibitions.

Africa Festival Stuttgart

2024 sees the 19th edition of the Africa Festival take place in Stuttgart. The programme is a diverse collection of concerts, talks, culinary delights, dance and fashion shows and workshops, and celebrates the richness of the creative arts from all over Africa.

The musical lineup is in itself a mini-tour of Africa, including musicians from Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, Kenya, Mozambique and Ghana. The sounds of jazz, funk, reggae, traditional drumming, afrobeats and afropop will be doing their best to get you dancing!

On top of that, there is a bazaar with products from across the continent. Spices, handicrafts, cosmetics, clothing, paintings, jewellery, beads and wickerwork will be available to buy, as well as a huge range of food to cater for every taste, from spicy jollof to boer sausages.

The supporting programme at Africa Festival Stuttgart

As well as the main stage of musical performances, there is a huge supporting programme. A workshop on Saturday, July 13, will get you drumming the Guinean way, while on Sunday, July 14, there is a talk on Benin and the tradition of voodoo in the region.

Senegalese artist Lune Ndiaye's painting can be found throughout the festival, and Zimbabwean fashion designer Arthur Mataruse will have a catwalk show on Saturday, July 13.

Children's activities

It's definitely a family-friendly festival, and children are of course welcome to dance along at the main stage. However, there is also a programme just for the kids.

On Sunday, July 14, there will be an interactive theatre performance about the long journey of a snail from the forests of Ghana to Stuttgart. There is also a story-teller who will be entertaining the kids with traditional African fairytales.

How to get to Africa Festival Stuttgart

The organisers are trying to make this a no-car festival. No parking is being available for the event, and they are asking everyone to come by public transport if possible. U-Bahn lines 1 and 14 and bus number 42 all stop at Erwin-Schoettle-Platz, right at the festival.

You can find out more about how to get to the festival, and the full lineup, on the Africa Festival Stuttgart website.
