The year 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Chinese National Circus, a superb group of acrobatic performers who give dazzling shows all over the world. The Chinese National Circus is made up acrobats from the Hunan Acrobatic Troupe, hailing from the city of Changsha, choreographed by Sun Qing Qing and directed by Raoul Schoregge.

The Chinese National Circus has been performing in German cities for the past two years and has proved wildly popular with audiences right from the beginning. The circus had a successful 2018 German premiere in Hannover: it attracted approximately 20.000 overall visitors to the first 10 shows. Now in 2020, the performance is set to be a spectacular celebration of Chinese New Year and the first-ever in Munich.

A captivating story told through circus arts

The compelling show tells the story of the members of a Chinese circus academy who are unable to reach their families due to a catastrophic landslide and have to spend Chinese New Year together at their academy. The experience causes the characters to perceive their homeland, culture and each other in brand new ways. The story takes viewers on an emotional journey into their inner selves and the depths of traditional China.

The performances in Germany include:

  • Itzehoe, Theater Itzehoe, Tuesday, January 28, 7.30pm
  • Soest, Stadthalle Soest, Saturday, February 1, 8pm
  • Singen, Stadthalle Singen, Sunday, February 2, 6pm
  • Neubrandenburg, Concert Church Neubrandenburg, Friday, February 7, 3pm
  • Munich, Deutsches Theater, Monday, February 10, 7.30pm

About Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year has been an important celebration in China for centuries and continues to the present day. This year is the year of the rat! Each lunar year is related to an animal sign according to a 12-year cycle and the rat ranks 1st in the zodiac. It's a symbol of wealth and good fortune. Each year links an animal and an element together; as this year’s element is earth, 2020 is the year of the Earth Rat.

If the rat is your birth symbol, the good news for you is that according to Chinese astrology, you can be optimistic, energetic, wealthy and have a sense of abundance. Lucky things for people born in the year of the rat include the colours blue, gold and green and numbers 2 and 3. Lucky flowers include the lily and the African violet.
