For three days each year, Berlin becomes the go-to place for art fans and collectors, as more than 50 galleries across the city open their doors to showcase works by new and established artists. Now in its 16th year, Gallery Week Berlin is one of the leading events for contemporary art in Germany.

Typically taking place in the spring, this year’s event has been moved to the autumn due to coronavirus restrictions.

The leading contemporary art event in Berlin

Gallery Weekend Berlin began back in 2005 as a private initiative by some of Berlin’s leading galleries. Over the years, it has gradually established itself as one of the highlights of the international art calendar and now attracts around 20.000 visitors each year - from regular art enthusiasts to dedicated collectors - who come from all over the world to experience Berlin’s unique creative scene.

This year’s event was originally scheduled to take place on the first weekend in May, but the coronavirus pandemic meant that all of the weekend’s larger events had to be postponed until mid-September.

The 16th edition of Berlin Gallery Weekend will include 48 galleries across the city, ranging from well-known exhibition spaces to new, experimental off-spaces and private collections, some of which are opening their doors for the first time. The weekend brings together work from both young and established artists, including Barbara Hammer, Tina Braegger and Fiona Tan, and this year’s programme has a special emphasis on female artists.

Plan your visit to Gallery Weekend Berlin

With nearly 50 galleries taking part in this year’s Gallery Weekend, there’s lots to see! You can find a list of all participating institutions, along with their opening hours, on the official Gallery Weekend Berlin website.

You can also download the official Gallery Weekend Berlin app, which puts all the practical information right at your fingertips and even allows you to create your own personalised art walk around your preferred exhibitions.
