48h Neukölln
Every year for 48 inspiring hours, the district of Neukölln in Berlin is transformed into an enormous art gallery - an area where artistic expression is fostered. This is known as 48h Neukölln, the largest independent festival of art in Berlin.
What is 48h Neukölln?
With the aim of revealing that art is more than just something that is confined to galleries, 48h Neukölln considers itself a forum for all conceivable art disciplines that can be found in Berlin.
However, Neukölln itself receives special attention, with art projects inspired by the district's local realities, diversity and special demographics. The festival also aims to shine light on the role art plays in society, both in reflecting it and affecting it.
What to expect at 48h Neukölln
A major priority for 48h Neukölln is having projects that are interdisciplinary, participatory and discursive in nature. During these 48 hours, all potential forms of contemporary artistic expression are explored, with the aim of increasing diversity both among people and among art.
However, this does not mean that art for its own sake is neglected. Focus is also given to aspects such as the conditions under which art is created, techniques used to create it and social functions that art can serve. The ways in which art deals with political issues are also discussed.
Festival of Young Arts
Though it may seem otherwise, 48h Neukölln is not just for hardcore art admirers and critics, but also for families, children and young people looking for a bit of art-related fun. The Festival of Young Arts - featuring projects created by both young people and artists - includes paintings, sculptures, theatre plays and films.
For the more curious attenders who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, there are a variety of workshops and adventurous excursions. Institutions, youth clubs and artists are invited to show off their varied artistic work.
Festival theme 2023
Each year, a new theme is chosen as the focus of that year’s 48h Neukölln. The theme for 2023 is "Playground”.
Drawing inspiration from the playful nature of art, it is an appropriate theme for these times. “Playground” emphasis that playfulness is a part of life and should be balanced with the other aspects of daily life.
