Berlin’s TV Tower: A technical masterpiece
Measuring 368 metres in height, including the antenna, the Berlin TV Tower is the tallest structure in Germany. It was built by the German Democratic Republic primarily for the broadcasting of GDR stations and was designed to demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the socialist system. Devised by GDR architect Hermann Henselmann, the sphere was inspired by the Soviet sputnik satellites and was to light up red, the colour of Communism.
Functioning as the main hub for several radio and television broadcasting stations, it also features an observation deck with a bar at 203 metres as well as a rotating restaurant at 207 metres. Attracting over a million visitors each year, it is one of the ten most popular attractions in Germany, thanks to its universal and timeless design.
50th Anniversary of a Berlin icon
In honour of its 50th anniversary, this landmark structure will host a special photo exhibition by photographer Thomas Billhardt. A unique broadcast will also take place on the day from the viewing platform with media partner Berliner Rundfunk.
To better serve the whole family, the mascot ‘Turmi’ will be on deck to offer younger visitors fun activities like face painting and colouring, while ticket holders can participate in a raffle where every ticket wins something, from souvenir items to football tickets. What’s more, special tickets modelled on tickets from 1969 will be issued at the box office from October 3 to December 31, 2019, marking the celebratory anniversary of the Berlin TV Tower.
