A festival in a German castle - Schwerin Castle Weekend Festival

Surrounded by an enchanting landscape of lakes and forests, the Schwerin Castle was part of the ducal residence of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin more than 100 years ago. Today it is both a museum and a seat of parliament, making it a centre of power and one of the must-see castles in Germany

Schwerin Castle Weekend Festival highlights

Every year, the Schwerin Castle opens its gates to the public during the weekend festival, which includes a historical parade, crafts market, light show and castle open day.

Schwerin Castle Parade

The festival parade on the Saturday is one of the highlights of the Schwerin Castle Festival, as members of the public are invited to dress in their finest Victorian attire and accompany the Grand Duke Friedrich-Franz II and his wife in a procession from Schwerin main station to the castle.

Upon arrival at the castle, the parade is welcomed by a grand opening with a choir concert. Interested in participating in the parade? Then don’t forget to register online on Schwerin’s Castle website ahead of time!

Son et Lumiere at Schwerin Castle

Once darkness descends over Schwerin, an astonishing light show will engulf the castle, taking its spectators on a journey through history.

In line with the festival’s theme, the light show on the Friday evening will tell the history of the castle with music, lasers and fireworks. The show on the Saturday evening explores the life the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the man who built the Schwerin Castle we know today.

Open day at Schwerin Castle

On Sunday, visitors have the chance to visit the Castle museum, parliament, church, courtyard and exhibitions for free as part of the festival's open day.

The state parliament is set to offer access to rooms normally closed to the public, such as the council of elders, the office of the President of the Landtag, the parliament library and other consulting rooms. The museum will open over 30 residential and festival rooms of the Grand Duke, including the throne room and ancestral gallery.
