Winter Film Festival in the Nikolaiviertel
What’s better than cosying up on a nice sofa or armchair with family and friends to watch a good film in the winter? Doing it for free, right in the heart of the historic centre of Berlin, Nikolaiviertel!
The cosiest winter film festival in Berlin
Every winter season the Nikolaikirchplatz invites the public to come together and enjoy a classic film for free. Nestled in between the Christmas Market by the historical quarter, the winter film festival will screen the classic 1944 German film “Die Feuerzangenbowle” (Flaming fire tongs punch).
The iconic film will be screened three times a day, and visitors are invited to come and watch it together on armchairs, sofas and blankets provided in a traditional wooden house. Of course, the famous punch itself will be offered for sale to ensure the audience is kept toasty and warm during the film. There will also be mulled wine, German beer and other refreshments.
Bonus - if your surname happens to be Pfeiffer with three F's, then you are the guest of honour at the Winter Film Festival and get a cup of Feuerzangenbowle for free every hour, inspired by the film.
About the “Die Feuerzangenbowle”
The German comedy film, directed by Helmut Weiss, is a 1944 adaptation of a book of the same name. The action sticks closely to the events of the book since the author also wrote the film's screenplay! The story follows a famous writer who goes undercover as a student at a small-town secondary school after his friends tell him he missed out on the good times when he was home-schooled.
During his time masquerading as a pupil, the writer Dr Johannes Pfeiffer gains a reputation of being a prankster and a series of hilarious events unfolds. The 90-minute film takes its title from the special punch the men drink together during the opening scene of the movie.
