Brandenburg Gate New Year’s party to charge entry for first time

The annual New Year's party hosted at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate will no longer be free of charge - new management says the charge is due to the cost of hiring security and fencing.

Annual Brandenburger Tor Silvester party to be ticketed

Since 1990, Berliners and tourists alike have been flocking to one of Germany’s most famous landmarks to ring in the New Year by watching bands and a magnificent fireworks display all for free.

Well, those days are gone. After the events company previously responsible for hosting the event in Berlin recently went bust, the new organisers have announced that the New Year’s Eve 2023 party will be the first to charge revellers for entry.

An exact price is yet to be confirmed, but tickets are likely to be at least 10 euros per person, a cost which the events company has said it will introduce to cover the expense of hiring security and fencing, which is expected to cost 25.000 euros. Tickets are set to go on sale within the next three weeks.

Organisers claim ticketing is to tighten security

Despite there never having been any major security issues at the Brandenburg Gate Silvester party, speaking to multiple media outlets, concert organiser Peter Schwenkow said that making the event ticketed was largely a matter of security. “We believe that knowing who is there means that the event is more safe,” said Schwenkow.

Partygoers unperturbed by the new pricing can expect a 2023 lineup which traditionally includes some of Germany’s biggest names, but which is yet to be announced!
