In preparation for a new exhibition, the DDR Museum in Berlin is asking people to rummage around their cupboards for everyday East German items.
Berlin’s DDR Museum appeals for items in new exhibits
The DDR Museum in Berlin is enlisting the help of collectors and former East German citizens. Curators are hunting down everyday East German products to feature in a new exhibition.
“We have already received a donation of lipstick and hairspray from the Florena range,” museum director Gordon von Goldin told local newspaper Berliner Kurier.
The museum explained that 35 items on its exhibit wishlist are particularly hard to come by, and any help in tracking them down would be appreciated. The items include coffee, baby food, tampons and sanitary towels, sugar cubes, salt, spices and Wofasept bottles (the disinfectant used in public buildings and on public transport in East Germany).
Anyone with a “DDR treasure” should email the museum
Anyone who has an interesting everyday East German product at home and would be happy to loan it for the exhibition should send an email to the museum, which should include a picture and a brief description of the item.
“We will get back to you as soon as possible with a confirmation or a rejection,” von Goldin explained. Items which are brought directly to the museum will not be accepted.
