Berlin has been named “city of the year” in Food and Travel Magazine’s annual reader awards for culinary and cultural diversity.
In its Food and Travel Awards, the UK-based publication Food and Travel Magazine has named Berlin “city of the year”.
The magazine gave no specific information as to why readers had granted Berlin the new title, with Bordeaux, Cape Town, Dubrovnik, Girona, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo and Zurich following as runners-up worth a mention.
“We are delighted that readers are recognising Berlin’s creative scene. The title shows that food has become a real reason to travel [to Berlin],” a spokesperson from the Berlin tourist board, Burkhard Kieker wrote in a press release.
Being crowned at the Food and Travel Awards marks the second consecutive year the German capital has won an international food award. The capital was granted 22nd place in Holidu’s 2023 Food City Destination Index.
Once unfairly dismissed as a hinterland of Currywurst and Döner, Berlin now claims 25 Michelin-star restaurants, an achievement which still pales in comparison to Tokyo’s 194.
