A restaurant in Germany and a Swiss restaurant run by a German chef have been named among the world’s best in a new assessment from La Liste.

Schwarzwaldstube named eighth-best restaurant in the world

Located in a light-filled, repurposed barn and nestled in Schwarzwald near Baiersbronn, the Schwarzwaldstube restaurant run by chef Torsten Michel has been named the eighth-best in the world by La Liste.

Released every year, the French restaurant guide analyses tens of thousands of restaurants internationally to find the crème de la crème. Unlike the Gault Millau and Michelin guides - which use overt and undercover restaurant critics to rank restaurants - La Liste uses over 600 guides, culinary and critical reviews and millions of online ratings to rank each restaurant out of 100.

Opened in 1977, the Schwarzwaldstube serves “contemporary interpretations of French cuisine classics”, including a vegetarian menu, and has maintained a three-star Michelin award since 1993, the longest-ever streak in German restaurant history.

For 2024, Japan was the country with the most top restaurants at 126, followed by the United States (114), France (111) and China (109).

German chef’s restaurant named best in the world

While the restaurant in Baiersbronn was named eighth-best in the world, La Liste named a Swiss restaurant with a German chef running its kitchen as the top spot on the planet.

The title went to the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl. Attached to the Swiss Deluxe Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel, the restaurant scored an outstanding 99,5 points out of 100, cementing its position at the top of the list.

Knogl comes from a long line of restaurateurs in Bavaria, where he trained under chef Heinz Beck in Munich, before moving to Cheval Blanc in 2007.

At the summit of the La Liste ranking, Knogl’s restaurant was joined by top eateries from France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

La Liste's best restaurants in the world for 2025

In all, here are the top 10 restaurants for 2025, according to La Liste:

  1. Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl (Basel, Switzerland)
  2. Guy Savoy (Paris, France)
  3. LEnclume - Simon Rogan (Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom)
  4. La Vagye d’Or - Cheval Blanc St-Tropez (Saint-Tropez, France)
  5. Le Bernardin (New York, United States)
  6. Lung King Heen (Hong Kong, China)
  7. Matsukawa (Minato-ku, Japan)
  8. Schwarzwaldstube (Baisersbronn, Germany)
  9. SingleThread (Healdsburg, United States)
  10. Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler (Brunico, Italy)
