Enjoy free public transport throughout Berlin on Wednesday

By Abi Carter

Leave the car at home and get on public transport for free this Wednesday in Berlin! In honour of World Car Free Day, the BVG transport association has waived ticket fares for the whole day.

Berlin takes part in World Car Free Day with free transport tickets

World Car Free Day is an initiative that sees towns and cities around the world encourage their residents to ditch driving for the day and experience streets free of motor traffic. The aim is to promote the improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking.

This year, the city of Berlin is also taking part and, for the first time ever, will be offering free day tickets all day on Wednesday, September 22, from midnight to midnight. All buses, S-Bahns and trams within the Berlin AB tariff area can be used for free (however, a Berlin BC or ABC ticket is required for trips to Brandenburg).

35 play streets will be closed to car traffic

In addition, Berlin will set up a total of 35 play streets for children, spread across all 12 city districts. Between the hours of 3 pm and 7 pm, sections of road will be closed off to traffic for four hours, and parking will be restricted, to enable the street space to be used for ball games, chalk drawings, cake eating or other joint activities.

Regine Günther, Senator for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, said, “Berlin is demonstrating that the German capital is on its way to a new kind of people-friendly mobility - like many other metropolises around the world.”
