Ver.di announces imminent strikes affecting 8 German airports

Trade union ver.di has announced that security staff at five German airports will carry out strike action on Thursday, March 14, with staff at a further three airports walking out on March 15, 2024.

Strikes planned for five German airports on March 14

Security staff at airports in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden and Stuttgart will go on strike on March 14, ver.di has announced.

The industrial action is expected to impact around 90.000 passengers, with Berlin’s BER airport already announcing that it has cancelled all departing flights scheduled for Thursday.

The strike will end at 6am on March 15, but will be followed by a strike by security staff at three more German airports, Dresden, Hanover and Leipzig.

Those due to fly out during the strike days should check with their relevant airport and airline as to whether their flight is still running before heading to the airport.

Ver.di increases pressure before new negotiation round

Ver.di spokesperson Wolfgang Pieper said that the union remains determined to secure higher wages in order to offset inflation costs for security staff who are union members.

The two days of strike pressure are being applied before the union heads back into negotiations on March 20. Pieper called employers’ current offer, to raise wages by between 1,20 euros and 0,75 cents an hour between March 2024 and April 2025, "insufficient".
