For fans of massive Easter celebrations, and especially those with small children, there is no more highly anticipated event than Ostermünde at the Travemünde beach resort in Lübeck. For four days, an estimated 25.000 residents and visitors will descend on the famed Baltic Sea beach for a family-friendly carnival atmosphere.
In keeping with the focus on families, many of the main attractions of Ostermünde are targeted towards children. The Easter bunny is nearly ubiquitous for these four days, and will personally lead the Easter egg parade that marches past ten gigantic painted Easter eggs to musical accompaniment.
A massive Easter egg hunt will begin at 3pm on Easter Sunday in the Brügmanngarten, and the largest Easter bonfire on the Baltic coast will commence at 8pm on Saturday. Pony riding with Alexandra Fritz is also a sure bet to delight many children.
Of course, there will also be plenty for adults to enjoy. Along with the various carnival-style rides and additional live music, there will be no shortage of tasty barbecue and other German food specialities, tempting deserts such as waffles and cake, as well as hot and cold drinks.
For visitors from abroad or those using long-distance travel within Germany, it may be worthwhile to stay an extra few days in Lübeck, and see what the city has to offer. Once a major member of the Hanseatic League, the trade confederation that covered large swaths of the Baltic and North Sea coasts, Lübeck is famed for its well-preserved brick Gothic architecture. The 12th-century castle, constructed by Adolf II, is a major attraction and an icon of the city.
