Daglfing, Brodersenstraße Munich

We all know that food tastes so much better when you make it, or even grow it yourself. Which is why, over two weekends in September, you are invited to come to harvest your own potatoes, fresh from the fields in Munich.

Pick your own potatoes

The city’s municipality invites you to pick your own potatoes on September 6 to 7 and September 20 to 21 from the potato field in Daglfing! The event, first launched 50 years ago, encourages locals to get their hands dirty and feel the soil beneath their feet as they gather their own potatoes.

A tractor with a sling harvester goes over the fields on the day of the picking, making it easier to collect the potatoes. Promising a day of fun for the whole family, this event offers several different types of potatoes for harvesting. And if you get hungry while picking, then fear not! It’s tradition to roast some of your potatoes on the spot in the bonfire and enjoy with delicious local drinks.

Harvest organic potatoes in Munich

During the harvesting, you will be able to pick a variety of potatoes - a staple in any traditional German dish -  including the “Nicola” potato, which great for boiling and using in salads; the rich, red-skinned “Laura” variety, whose floury texture is ideal for baking and mashing; and “Theresa”, which has a pale golden yellow colour and is great for roasting in the oven.

In addition, rare and older varieties of potatoes, such as the “Violetta" and the "Emmalie" will be sold in small amounts. Once you have harvested to your heart’s content, you can purchase a 5-kilogram sack for seven euros or a 12.5-kilogram bag for 13 euros, to take your potatoes home with you.

Attending the potato harvest

Before you head out to pick your own potatoes, do check the local weather forecast - in case of heavy rain, the self-harvest will be postponed as it will be too muddy.

The fields are easily accessible by car, but visitors are encouraged to come by bicycle or public transport whenever possible. For all the detail on harvesting your own potatoes, head on over to the Munich tourism website.
