Did you know that 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the world-renowned Bauhaus (Hochschule für Gestaltung), the architecture and design school originally founded in Weimar? In honour of this momentous centenary occasion, cultural institutions, museums and businesses have teamed up with Kulturprojekte Berlin to host a one-week festival, celebrating the impact Bauhaus has had on the city of Berlin.

Bauhaus Week encompasses a wide-ranging programme of events, exhibitions, guided and performances. The city-wide festival will bring Bauhaus ideas and influences to life in countless ways, so be sure to mark your calendars now!

What is Bauhaus?

The acclaimed architecture and design school, founded by Walter Gropius, first opened in Weimar in 1919, before moving to the nearby Dessau in 1925 and finally Berlin 1932, only to be shut down by the Nazis a year later.

Bauhaus, literally translating to “construction house”, grew into a modern art movement in its own right over the years, characterised by its one-of-a-kind approach to design and architecture. Today, Bauhaus is widely-recognised for both its lasting influence on modern and contemporary art, and its unique aesthetic towards product design, which merges fine arts with a stripped back approach.

100 years bauhaus berlin

100 years of Bauhaus in Berlin

This year sees Berlin celebrating 100 years of Bauhaus influence on Berlin in a yearlong series of events, including the week-long festival.

Bauhaus Week Berlin is set to open simultaneously with the iconic Long Night of Museums on August 31 and end with European Heritage Days on September 8, which see a number of monuments normally closed to the public stage events with a special emphasis on Bauhaus. One of the highlights of the festival is the opening of an exceptional anniversary exhibition, organised by the Bauhaus archive / Museum für Gestaltung and entitled “Original Bauhaus”, at Berlinische Galerie.

Bauhaus week Berlin 2019 programme

With a number of events taking place across the city during Bauhaus Week 2019, we have rounded up a few of our favourites to share with you:

  • Early-morning yoga: Visitors are invited to attend early-morning yoga classes on nine terraces and rooftops across Berlin. The sessions will be led by female Bauhaus students and include architectural studies on each location.
