The historical market town of Kipfenberg, Bavaria, invites you to come on a journey to ancient times this summer. Rediscover the past of Imperium Romanum and free Germania at the Limesfest, a traditional folk festival with historical performances from the Roman and Middle Ages!

The history behind Limes Festival

Several thousand visitors are set to descend upon the community at the geographical centre of Bavaria during the folk festival. The historic marketplace of Kipfenberg becomes the backdrop for a traditional folk festival that celebrates its location on the Limes, the Roman imperial border.

The area encompasses a number of historical monuments, famous castles and towers, as well as the Raetian Limes, one of the most outstanding archaeological remains in Central Europe. The folk festival, which has been taking place for more than 40 years, opens with a concert and dance performance, before the march of the Romans and Teutons on the market square on Friday evening, which recalls the town's eventful past.

Relive the Roman and Medieval times at Limesfest

A tent is erected by the fairgrounds on Eichstätter Straße, while other stalls are set up by the marketplace. Visitors and locals alike spend the festival in true Bavarian style - eating traditional food, drinking together while listening to hearty brass band music, and having a stroll through the fairgrounds.

On Sunday afternoon, expect to see people dressed up in folk costumes as well as Roman and Medieval outfits, as the folk dance from the national costume club takes place after the mass service in the tent. A traditional brunch will also take place Sunday morning, during which special glasses commissioned for the festival will be sold.
