Rheingau Wine Festival
Fancy yourself a bit of a wine connoisseur? Or just a wine fanatic? Then this wine festival should be right up your alley. Rheingau and Wiesbaden winemakers flock to Wiesbaden annually to present their latest vintage at the Rheingau Wine Festival.
Over 1.000 white, red and sparkling wines from the iconic region are available for testing at 100 or so stalls, ranging from crisp, fruity summer wines, to full-bodied and drier varieties.
In addition to sipping some of the region's finest vintages in the city’s bustling culinary square, you can also sample complimentary local delicatessen at the numerous stands set up by restaurants and cafes nearby.
All you need to know about the Rheingau Wine Festival
The Rheingau Wine Festival dates back to 1976. After growing rapidly in the 1980s, from 33 stalls to over 100, the line of stalls in Wiesbaden's pedestrian area gained the nickname, the “longest wine bar in the world.”
The festival was set up to serve as a platform for winemakers and wine-lovers to share their viniculture interests. Its determined focus on local wines means that over the years it has become the festival for discussing and promoting Rheingau wines. However, wines made from alternative grape varieties are also on offer, next to the assortment of Rheingau Rieslings.
Three outdoor stages are also erected during the festival, where a varied music programme is sure to keep visitors entertained while sampling their wine.
Getting to the wine festival
The Rheingau Wine Festival is nestled between the Hessian State Parliament, the City Hall, the Market Church and “Dern'sches Gelände" on the Schlossplatz.
As the event is outdoors, visitors are advised to use public transportation to get there and back. What’s more, there are no public parking lots for this wine festival, so be sure you plan your journey to the event ahead of time.
