Berlin to open new bike parking garage

Construction work is set to begin for a mass public bike parking garage in Berlin. The parking garage will have two floors and a capacity for 800 bikes, as well as larger parking spots for cargo bikes and bikes with child carriers.

The garage will be located directly outside the Schöneweide S-Bahn station, which is served by both S-Bahn and regional trains. According to a press release from the city of Berlin, the garage will be built out of wood and is being constructed by Infravelo.

Schöneweide bike parking will have repair workshop

What’s more, the bike parking garage will be kitted out with a repair workshop and bike rental station. Infravelo expects the entire construction project to cost around 5,3 million euros. 2,6 euros million euros of this will come from the Federal Transport Ministry’s fund to develop bike parking garages at train stations.

The fund was developed in 2023 as part of the Federal Fund for Climate and Transformation and aims to install 1,5 million additional bike parking spaces at 5.400 German stations by 2030.

Other projects subsidised by the fund include a bike parking tower at Altstadtbahnhof in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, as well as Eberswalde in Brandenburg and Dresden in Saxony.
