Rainy, windy weather is moving across Germany, with the first storm expected Friday, October 23 and another on Sunday. Here’s what it means for your weekend:
A wet and windy weekend in Germany
Storm Austen crossed the English Channel from the northwest and hit Germany’s North Sea coastline on Friday morning, bringing high waves, wind and rain.
Austen is the season's first named storm, and after sweeping the Frisian Islands, Helgoland, Sylt and other parts of the coast, it is expected to move further inland.
As of Friday mid-morning, the German Weather Service (DWD) has announced a level one or level two warning for much of western Germany. Residents are advised to secure any loose objects, such as large garden furniture.
By Saturday, the DWD expects a level one warning across much of the country, and a level two warning will likely remain in place around Bremen and Kahler Asten.
Stormy conditions will persist into Sunday, when the DWD forecasts high winds and a level one warning across much of the east and south. A level two warning is expected around Kahler Asten, Bremen, Hanover and Hamburg.
Temperatures may reach lower 20s next week
The weather will remain relatively warm, even over the stormy weekend. German cities will see temperatures of between 9 and 14 degrees celsius on Saturday and between 11 and 15 degrees on Sunday.
On Monday, once the storm has settled, temperatures will rise. According to the DWD’s forecast, the sun will intermittently have its hat on across much of the country; cloudy weather will persist only along the Baltic and North Sea coastlines.
On Tuesday, temperatures may reach the upper teens, and in Saarland, the Palatinate and the Upper Rhine, they may even creep into the lower 20s.
