One of Germany’s most famous Bräuhäuser has been ranked as the ninth best place in the world to take a bite into the local culture and history. The spot in Bavaria is more than 400 years old.

Hofbräuhaus München voted among most legendary eateries

A ranking collated by TasteAtlas has named the famous Hofbräuhaus in Munich as one of the best restaurants in the world for locals to get a feel for local history and culture along with their traditional meals.

The Hofbräuhaus, a beer hall which was originally built in 1589, was ranked in ninth place, with the Schweinshaxe (pork knuckles) that the venue serves being chosen as its “most iconic dish”. The establishments that made it into the ranking were chosen by TasteAtlas for their “commitment to culinary authenticity”.

Along with its meat-heavy dishes - indeed almost all of the dishes that made the ranking were some version of meat and vegetables - the Bräuhaus was praised for its “adherence to traditional brewing techniques” for beer.

The TasteAtlas ranking gave the spot broadstroke praise for its love of tradition and forgot that it was also the site where Hitler announced the foundation of the Nazi Party in February 1920.

Wiener Schnitzel voted as the most iconic dish by TasteAtlas

The show was stolen by another meaty favourite - the Wiener Schnitzel served at Figlmüller in Vienna, also known as “the home of the Wiener Schnitzel since 1905”. Figlmüller’s signature is so large that it consumes the whole dinner plate that it is served on.

Across the pond, the legendary Katz’s Delicatessen was placed at number two in the ranking. The New York institution stacks more meat than you have ever seen into their pastrami on rye sandwich and has been doing so since 1888.

The dish to round out the top three meant a trip to the other side of the world and Warung Mak Beng in Indonesia. The restaurant’s deep-fried fish dish Ikan Goreng is served with spicy sambal sauce and a beachside view.
