Engineering Manager / Lounge by Zalando (all genders)

Role: Lounge by Zalando is an online shopping club serving millions across Europe. Demand Tech builds systems for customer acquisition, engagement and AI enablement. As an Engineering Manager you will lead a multidisciplinary team of backend, full‑stack and ML/GenAI engineers, working with Principal Engineers and Product to deliver customer‑facing and platform capabilities. Responsibilities: - Lead and grow a high‑performing engineering team, fostering an inclusive, high‑trust environment. - Own delivery of impactful systems spanning landing pages, homepages, CRM channels, data and AI platforms. - Shape architecture and technical direction across backend, data and ML/AI systems. - Bridge software and applied science by enabling production ML/LLM pipelines. - Champion operational excellence: reliability, scalability, cost‑awareness, KPIs/SLOs, observability and incident response. - Collaborate with Product, Data & AI and other engineering teams, managing dependencies and stakeholder communication. Qualifications: - Proven engineering leadership as an Engineering Manager with a track record of building and retaining high‑performing teams. - Strong technical foundation in backend/distributed systems (Kotlin/Java/Python) and cloud‑native architectures (AWS preferred). - Experience with ML or applied science in production (personalisation, recommendation, LLM‑based features). - Product and business mindset with understanding of impact on conversion, engagement or revenue. - Strong architectural thinking and ability to make pragmatic trade‑offs. - Operational mindset for running reliable production systems. - Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
