Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf
Every year the city centre of Düsseldorf is transformed into a real Christmas winter wonderland, filled with festive music, handicrafts, food and more! Consisting of six differently themed Christmas markets, all of which are within walking distance of each other, this is one festive village you don’t want to miss out on!
Spreading Christmas cheer through Düsseldorf
For just over five weeks, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a beautiful array of traditional treats, handmade gifts and Christmas decor at one of the city’s special Christmas markets.
In the heart of the Old Town, merry stands modelled on the traditional Düsseldorf-style houses are erected, where vendors sell their Christmas wares to passersby. The traditional mulled wine pyramid opposite the department store attracts young and old, while the Ferris wheel on Burgplatz offers stunning views of the city.
The Engelchenmarkt transforms the Heinrich-Heine-Platz into a bright sea of lights, as the decorative golden angels bathe the Christmas market in a special glow against the sandstone façade of the historic Carsch-Haus department store. Here visitors can sample both traditional and avant-garde treats while warming themselves with a mug of mulled wine or German beer.
Düsseldorf’s themed Christmas markets
The city hall acts as a magical backdrop for the Handwerker-Markt on Marktplatz, where visitors can explore a Christmas market full of huts based on the Renaissance brick-built landmark. Glass blowers, woodturners, painters, pewterers and brush makers offer their gorgeous products here. Most are happy to demonstrate their skills if asked - and don’t miss out on the hand-carved life-sized manger from Bethlehem.
Step into a fairytale at the Märchen Markt on Schadowplatz, where you can enjoy many German snacks while picking out Christmas decorations and gifts for your loved ones. The kids can also have a joyous time and delight themselves with the children's carousel.
Visiting Düsseldorf’s many magical Christmas markets
So much more than just a Christmas market, Düsseldorf’s Christmas village is a true sight to behold. Don’t miss out on seeing the Dome of Lights on Königsallee or the ice rink on Corneliusplatz, all decked out in Christmas lights, either.
