Mannheim Middle Ages Market
This Middle Ages Market (Mittelalterlicher Jahrmarkt) takes over the Herzogenried Park in Mannheim for a whole weekend in March. Step back in time and watch artisans work and knights battle at this impressive event.
Medieval artisans at work
Just like in medieval times, people from all over come together to sell their wares, meet old friends, eat good food and enjoy themselves. Although lots of visitors dress for the era, you can definitely come in your regular modern clothing!
Among the linen tents, you will find sculptors working on sandstone, leatherworkers stitching up belt pouches, shoemakers pounding hobnails, a blacksmith working the forge, a potter turning out plates and cups, and even a historically appropriate eyeglasses maker.
All the stallholders will be selling their wares as well, so be sure to bring cash with you. Be on the lookout for beautiful leather goods like purses and journals, as well as unique jewellery. Magicians and jugglers wander through the crowd, looking to impress and maybe earn a coin or two.
Medieval enthusiasts of all ages
It’s not only the stallholders who are dressed for the middle ages, but plenty of the crowd will be in robes and dresses too. The medieval living history scene is big in Germany, and lots of people travel around to different markets, looking to buy mock weapons, belt buckles, leather goods and more – just like they did in the Middle Ages.
All ages attend, so you’re as likely to see kids running around in small-size robes and caps as adults in full armour. There will be people camping in the park over the weekend with medieval tents and cooking supplies, and you’re welcome to tour the camping areas to see their impressive set up. Campers and stallholders alike are generally happy to answer questions about what they’re wearing, or their equipment. Just wandering through the site is fascinating!
Take up a bow and arrow
There’s also plenty of opportunities to get stuck in yourself. Try your hand at archery or throwing medieval javelins.
For kids, there is the hand-operated carousel, as well as rope-making, felt-making, glass-blowing, and sandstone-carving workshops.
