4 German airlines named among worst in Europe

Four German airlines are among the 20 worst airlines in Europe, according to a new ranking by the consumer portal Flightright.
Worst European airlines in 2025
Flightright, a consumer portal supporting customers whose flights are delayed or cancelled, analyses the 20 largest airlines in Europe to compile an annual index. The airlines are scored based on three categories:
- Reliability of flights
- Payment behaviour for compensation
- Customer satisfaction
Airlines are rated between 1 and 5 for each category (with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest) to determine an overall score out of 5. In 2025, Finnair (2,48 points) was named the worst airline in Europe, followed by the Spanish budget airline Vueling (2,52 points) and Ryanair (2,58 points) to round out the worst three.
Lufthansa ranks among the worst European airlines
Lufthansa was the worst-performing airline from Germany, coming in 14th place in the ranking, with an overall score of 3,18 points. Of the four German airlines included in the ranking, Lufthansa scored the worst for its compensation policy (3 points).
The next German airline was TUIfly with an overall 3,23 points in 16th place. Eurowings and Discover Airlines were named the best of a bad bunch, coming in 19th and 20th place. Eurowings only managed an overall score of 3,32 points, but performed well in the compensation category with 4 points.
Discover Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, was the highest-scoring “worst European airline”. According to the ranking, Discover is not reliable (2,5 points), but when flights are delayed or cancelled, it’s excellent at issuing compensation (5 points).
