Bavaria named among Lonely Planet’s top destinations for 2025

Lonely Planet has named the German federal state of Bavaria as one of the hottest destinations for 2025. Already considering your holidays for next year? It’s just a train journey away.

Doorstep destination named among Lonely Planet’s best for 2025

Those living in Germany are lucky enough to have one of Lonely Planet’s top destinations for 2025 right on their doorstep.

Alongside Switzerland’s Canton Valais, the Jordan Trail and the Giresun and Ordu region of Turkey, Bavaria was named one of the hottest spots for travelling in the new year.

The landlocked federal state of the south is Germany’s largest, full of magical forests, shimmering lakes, medieval towns, fairytale castles and more cosy beer halls than you can cover in a long weekend.

"The best way to start your day in Munich is with a Weißwurst breakfast – a pair of veal sausages, a crispy pretzel, sweet mustard and a tankard of wheat beer,” tour guide José Pavez told the travel publisher.

What does Lonely Planet recommend to see in Bavaria?

Boiling down Bavaria for a quick break, Lonely Planet set out three highlights. Spend an evening in a Munich Biergarten - namely Chinesischer Turm or Forchheimer Kellerwald - head south to the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle or take a drive down the Romantic Road, a picturesque 350-kilometre route stretching between Würzburg and Füssen.

Honourable mentions from the guide included the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Alpine resort and of course, no travel tip for Bavaria would be complete without it, Oktoberfest.
