The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned that “turbulent” stormy weather will cross the country on Monday, with the southeast and southwest likely to bear the brunt.
Stormy weather expected across Germany on Monday
Rain, stormy weather and highs of 30 degrees celsius are expected in Germany on Monday. “Weather-wise, Monday will be turbulent,” DWD meteorologist Thore Hansen reported.
The southwestern and southeastern parts of the country are expected to experience the greatest storms. The DWD has issued a warning for heavy rain, large hailstones and strong squalls between Lake Constance (Bodensee) and the Herzgebirge region.
Stormy weather is expected to reach the northern and eastern parts of the country on Monday afternoon. “Wind is the main focus there,” Hansen explained. Winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour are forecast.
A yellow weather warning has been issued for southern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. An orange weather warning has been issued for Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Hurricane Festival evacuated due to stormy weather
While sunshine and highs of 36 degrees covered Germany over the weekend, stormy weather already began rolling in on Sunday evening. At the aptly named Hurricane Festival in Lower Saxony, around 65.000 attendees sheltered in cars at 8.30pm as a two-hour storm took hold.
Screens on either side of the main stage instructed festivalgoers to take shelter, and anyone who had extra space in their car to keep another person dry was told to flash their headlights. After the storm passed, Green Day, the final headline act, were able to take the stage.
