The so-called “worm moon” will be full and fantastically bright in the skies over Germany on the night of March 3. And the weather is forecast to facilitate good viewing!
Full moon visible on March 3
The full moon is set to look magnificent tonight! After peaking at around 12.30pm on Tuesday, the March full moon will be big and bright in the sky this evening. March’s full moon is also called the “worm moon”, named after the time of year when worms wriggle up through the warm soil.
Each month’s full moon has its own name based on seasonal events, for example, February’s is the “snow moon” and June’s is the “strawberry moon”. These names are thought to have originated in ancient cultures predating the Julian calendar.
From Berlin to Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, and Cologne, the skies should be clear for most of the evening, making for excellent full moon viewing.
While people in Germany can catch a glimpse of the bright worm moon tonight, those in the Americas, Asia, and Australia will get an extra special treat. The full moon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, blocking the sun’s rays from shining on the moon, casting a reddish-pink shadow and creating a full, blood moon.
When is the next full moon in Germany?
If you miss the March full moon, don’t worry, there is another one around the corner. The April full moon, also known as the “Easter moon”, “grass moon” or “pink moon”, is due to peak at 4.12am on April 2, 2026.
But April’s “pink moon” has a deceptive name; don’t expect it to be a reddish-pink blood moon. It is named as such because its arrival coincides with the season when 68 species of phlox tend to bloom.
