About this role
Role
At Zalando, we deliver a tailored marketplace experience driven entirely by data. The Customer Insights Engineering team optimizes the onsite experience for 50M+ active customers by building curated data products that track customer journeys and engagement across digital touchpoints. We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer to design, scale, and maintain end‑to‑end engineering solutions—including advanced data pipelines, curated data products, and core platform infrastructure—to accelerate the journey from raw data to actionable insights.
Responsibilities
- Design and build foundational curated data products and reusable data models for analytics and data practitioners across Zalando.
- Develop infrastructure and tooling that enable teams to query data, develop, and deploy pipelines in a reliable and automated way.
- Champion operational excellence by building and maintaining observability, health checks, and automated reliability tooling for core data systems.
- Establish frameworks and engineering best practices that raise the bar for technical rigor, modular architecture, and speed to insights.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, data, and security teams to ensure all data systems are secure, compliant, and production‑grade by default.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in Data Engineering with a focus on Python and Apache Spark.
- Expert‑level skills in writing, profiling, and optimizing complex SQL queries.
- Strong foundation in data modeling and designing scalable, resilient end‑to‑end data architectures.
- Hands‑on experience architecting data assets on AWS utilizing Databricks (including Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and cost‑optimization strategies).
- Proven track record of deploying production‑grade systems using Apache Airflow and automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Bonus: practical interest in Agentic Data Engineering—using AI tools/agents to automate and accelerate the software development lifecycle of data pipelines.
What We Offer
- 27 days of holiday per year (increasing up to 30 days), plus 2 paid volunteering days.
- Employee shares program and discounts on fashion and beauty products.
- Relocation assistance (subject to prior agreement).
- Family services, health and wellbeing options, mental health support and coaching.
- Training platform and biannual peer‑to‑peer review for development.
