Oktoberfest Munich

Theresienwiese, Bavariaring, 80336 Munich

It’s never too early to plan your visit to Oktoberfest, so get ready for the biggest international party in Germany!

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (people’s festival), where beer tents, wooden benches, funfair rides and food stalls fill up the Theresienwiese in Munich. Oktoberfest typically ends on the first Sunday in October. That’s why much of the event is actually in September, to allow the festivities to continue for a long stretch!

Dress up for Oktoberfest

Taking place in the largest city of Bavaria, Oktoberfest is a great excuse to get into traditional Bavarian costume. Men don the brown Lederhosen and white or chequered shirts, long socks and a hat with a feather. Meanwhile, women wear the Dirndl – the dress in bold colours or black with a frilly low-cut blouse. Looking the part is a big element of Oktoberfest fun!

Entertainment at Oktoberfest

Until 6pm visitors can usually enjoy the jolly sound of traditional German brass music playing. Then, as the evening draws in, the music changes to German Schlager pop and electronic music, getting revellers in the mood for typical Oktoberfest beer-swilling camaraderie.

Come to Oktoberfest – admission is free

Getting into the festival area and beer tents is completely free. You just pay for what you consume, so budgeting for Oktoberfest is at your own discretion. The yearly beer prices are usually released in June, so keep an eye on the Oktoberfest website to budget for your trip to Munich!

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the German beers are not cheap. Plus, you’ll also be requiring nutritious food to soak up all that alcohol. There will be countless food stalls serving everything from bratwurst to schnitzel, with these traditional dishes costing anywhere between 7 and 22 euros.

Plan your trip to Oktoberfest

Since Oktoberfest is a busy event, using public transport is recommended. Take the U-Bahn U3, U6, U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese or Schwanthalerhöhe.
