The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast highs of 22 degrees celsius for the mid-week followed by snowfall in some regions by next week.

Germany faces November heatwave, then snow

The weather in Germany is expected to fluctuate over the coming week. According to the DWD, residents in the Upper Rhein Plane (Oberrheingraben), between Frankfurt and Basel, can expect maximum temperatures of 22 degrees on Thursday.

Residents in Stuttgart and Cologne will see temperatures reach 19 degrees, 18 degrees in Saarbrücken and 17 degrees in Hanover, Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig. Speaking to t-online, meteorologist Dominik Jung called the temperatures “extreme” for mid-November.

“Sahara wind is coming in our direction and it will be very warm,” Jung explained. “Local records will be broken”. While Friday will bring rain in northern parts of Germany, spring-like weather will persist in the south.

Eastern regions can expect snow next week

The weather will take a turn as a blast of polar air arrives on Saturday. According to the DWD, residents from Bremen to Dresden, Hanover, Hamburg, Berlin and Rostock can expect 7 degrees on Saturday. Highs of 14 degrees will persist in Cologne and Saarbrücken.

Snowfall is possible in mountainous regions from Saturday night into Sunday. “In Germany’s low mountain range (Mittelgebirge), five to 10 centimetres of snow is possible at altitudes over 500 to 600 metres,” Jung explained.

But it is on Tuesday next week (November 18) that cities could also see a dusting; Stuttgart, Munich and Erfurt will see temperatures drop to 0 degrees. Temperatures between 2 and 7 degrees are expected for the rest of the country.

“It's going to be a real rollercoaster ride. Up, then steeply down again. A drastic change in weather," Jung added.
