Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have been hit with heavy snowfall, disrupting public transport, causing several road accidents and a motorway standstill.
Deutsche Bahn announced on Friday morning that long-distance trains running from Stuttgart and Frankfurt to Paris will be disrupted until further notice due to heavy snow in southern Germany and France.
The news comes after snow hit Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, France and Switzerland on Thursday, causing chaos for train passengers and road traffic. On the A98 near Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg, heavy snow trapped 150 cars on the autobahn overnight, according to police in Freiburg.
Over 200 road accidents were recorded between the Black Forest and Lake Constance, while traffic was halted on the A81 between Würzburg and Switzerland. As of Friday morning, disruptions continue on the A81 between Schaffhausen and Singen, Singen and Stuttgart, and Heilbronn and Stuttgart Engelbergtunnel.
The German Weather Service (DWD) said on Friday morning that snowy and icy conditions will likely continue in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, even posing “danger to life and limb”.
Lower altitudes will see more snow alongside changeable and windy showers, while snowfall in the Alps is expected to subside.
