A sea wind is bringing sub-zero temperatures and bright sunshine to Germany at the beginning of this week. Locals in Dresden have already felt lows of -12 degrees celsius.

Sub-zero temperatures come to Germany

As a sea wind arrives, freezing and sub-zero temperatures are crossing Germany. On Monday morning, locals in Dresden felt lows of -12 degrees, in Hamburg -10 degrees and in Berlin and Brandenburg -7 degrees.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), temperatures are expected to rise throughout Monday but fall again tonight, with -1 degrees forecast for Berlin, -2 degrees in Leipzig, 0 degrees in Frankfurt and -2 degrees in Munich.

On Tuesday, locals in Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Cologne and Frankfurt should stay in or wrap up very warm, with -8 degrees forecast for all five German cities. In the north, temperatures between -5 and -6 degrees have been forecast for Hanover, Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin.

The freezing weather will ease as the week goes on, but it will remain cold. On Thursday, temperatures of between 2 and 7 degrees have been forecast across the country. Northern Germany will see the warmer weather as 2 and 3 degrees are forecast in southern cities.

DWD urges caution on roads and pavements

As freezing temperatures prevail, the German Weather Service (DWD) is urging caution on slippy pavements, roads and motorways.

German police now believe that dangerous driving conditions caused by wind and icy weather are behind FlixBus crash on the night of January 11.

The accident, in which two people were killed and many injured, occurred as the long-distance bus was travelling along the A11 road between Berlin and the Polish city of Szczecin.
