In a recent study, Berlin has climbed into the top 10 cities worldwide. The annual study, undertaken by Time Out magazine, praised the German city for its abundance of cultural goings-on.

The 53 best cities worldwide in 2022

Every year, Time Out publishes a list of the best cities to live in worldwide. The international company asks around 20.000 people, who live in big cities all over the world, about where they are living. Time Out then collates the data and crunches the numbers to come up with a list of the best cities in the world.

For the past two years, the study focused more on city life during the coronavirus pandemic; how cities were able to adapt and make life easier (or bearable) for their citizens. However, this year, with society opening back up, the study has returned its attention to what makes these cities great places to live.

In order for the ranking to reflect this, less weight was put on things like community spirit and resilience. More weight was put on things like the quality of nightlife, the best places to eat local food and, in Germany at least, the availability of good German beer. The study also focuses on cultural aspects of the city, like museums, monuments and other sights and attractions.

Berlin ranked as the eighth best city in the world

The German capital put in a stellar performance in this year’s rankings, climbing into the top 10 at eighth place. The ranking praised Berlin for its vast variety of things to do, from the city’s festivals to its art shows, spas and walking tours, Berlin was described as having “something for every kind of visitor”.

The study’s respondents also considered Berlin inexpensive. In fact, only 10 percent of respondents described the city as “expensive” – the lowest of any city in the ranking. Germany’s 9-euro ticket, which provides for travel on public transport in Germany for one month, was a major factor in this. A huge 97 percent of Berliners who took part in the study praised the public transport system, making it the most beloved public transport system in the world.

  2. Chicago
  3. Medellín
  4. Glasgow
  5. Amsterdam
  6. Prague
  7. Marrakech
  8. Berlin
  9. Montreal
  10. Copenhagen
