DWD issues level 4 storm warning for southwestern Germany
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued weather warnings for Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse on Tuesday, September 9.
Stormy weather hits Germany on Tuesday
Extremely heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in southwestern and western parts of Germany on Tuesday. The DWD has issued a level 4 storm warning for German cities such as Aachen, level 3 warning for Düsseldorf, Cologne and Bonn, and a level 2 warning for Frankfurt, Essen and Dortmund, among others.
In certain regions, the DWD forecasts up to 90 litres of rainfall per square metre over a 6-hour period, with thunderstorms possible in some areas. The worst of the storm is expected to pass by Tuesday afternoon.
Storm will move across northeastern Germany
As the day continues, the rain will move northward and quieten a bit. However, heavy rainfall of between 30 and 50 litres per square metre could still hit western Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia in the afternoon and evening.
During a storm, it is advised that you close all windows and doors, secure loose outdoor objects and avoid areas where you may be hit by falling objects. If you are away from home when a storm hits, seek shelter in the nearest building and park cars in garages where possible and away from large trees.
