Snow forces DB to cancel trains in northern Germany
Deutsche Bahn has cancelled certain trains in northern Germany due to inclement weather on Thursday, January 8 and Friday, January 9. Heavy snow around Hanover means trains connecting Hamburg, Hanover, Dresden and Berlin are cancelled.
“One of our most important hubs [Hanover] is affected, and it is no longer possible to run long-distance trains in northern Germany,” a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson told the dpa. According to Deutsche Bahn, trains on the following routes are currently cancelled:
- Copenhagen - Hamburg
- Westerland/Kiel - Hamburg
- Binz/Stralsund/Rostock - Berlin
- Norddeich/Emden - Hanover/Ruhrgebiet
- Hamburg - Berlin
- Hanover - Berlin
- Hanover - Frankfurt/Würzburg
- Hanover - Ruhrgebiet
- Berlin - Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe
- Rostock - Dresden
Trains on these routes are not all cancelled, but are disrupted:
- Wolfsburg - Berlin
- Hanover - Würzburg
- Frankfurt - Cologne
What to do if your Deutsche Bahn train is cancelled because of snow
Deutsche Bahn explained that extra staff were on shift at Hanover Hauptbahnhof to help affected passengers. All passengers who purchased their ticket before January 7 to travel between January 8 and 10 can delay their journey and use the same ticket on a later train.
Affected passengers must travel to the same destination stated on their original ticket, but can take a different route. Seat reservations - which cost extra and must be booked separately on Deutsche Bahn - can be cancelled at no extra cost.
