40 centimetres of snow and lows of -13C forecast for Germany

The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast up to 40 centimetres of snow and chilly lows of -13 degrees celsius for February 19 and 20.

Winter weather doubles down in Germany

Winter is not done with us yet! According to forecasts from the DWD, parts of Germany will see as much as 40 centimetres of fresh snow on Thursday and Friday.

Snow is expected across North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and eastern Bavaria. The Werdenfelser Land region in Bavaria is expecting the heaviest snowfall, 20 centimetres is forecast to fall in the western and central Mittelgebirge region, while 5 to 10 centimetres is expected across the remaining regions.

Overnight and into Friday frost will set in across western and southwestern parts of the country. In the north and northeast, there will be frost, clear skies and lows of -13 degrees.

Commuters should expect disruption and slippery roads

The winter’s reassertion coincides with public transport and road strikes across several German cities, namely in Frankfurt and Hamburg.

On Thursday, there will be no U-Bahn services or trams running in Frankfurt due to a ver.di strike, S-Bahn services and regional trains will still run.

Autobahn employees are also taking part in a “Streikwoche” (strike week), affecting several central Autobahn depots and routes. On Thursday, employees at the Elbtunnel control centre in Hamburg plan to strike, meaning traffic will be limited.

If you are travelling, take care. The DWD has warned commuters and pedestrians across the country to be careful of slippery roads and pavements.

Snow and icy weather have been so relentless in January and February that some hospitals were prompted to sound the alarm on weather-related injuries. At the end of January Charité Hospital in Berlin said it was seeing a high number of patients arriving with arm, ankle or neck fractures, shoulder injuries or head injuries.
