The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a snow and ice warning for the south and southeastern parts of the country. Further snowfall is also expected in the northeast.

First snow of the winter arrives in Germany

Much of Germany saw its first dusting of winter snow from Sunday night into Monday. The DWD issued Level 2 weather warnings for snow and ice around Stuttgart and Tübingen, but slippery streets could be found across Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg.

The weather is expected to stay cold, snowy, wet and cloudy. Heavy snowfall is also expected in eastern Bavaria and lighter snow in northeastern parts of the country. Over the coming days, nighttime temperatures will stay between -1 and 3 degrees celsius, while daytime temperatures will reach between -1 and 6 degrees. Wrap up warm and tread carefully out there!

Snow and ice disrupt transport across Germany

Slippery roads led to several traffic accidents on the night from Sunday to Monday. On the A93 near Maxhütte-Haidhof, Bavaria, three passengers were killed and others were injured in a car accident. The cause is yet unclear, but police believe ice played a role.

There were further slip accidents on the A9 in Mittelfranken, Bavaria, on the A7 in Baden-Württemberg and 38 accidents on the roads in Hesse. In the region around Cuxhaven, Jever and Diepholz in Lower Saxony, there were 42 slip accidents.

Winter weather also disrupted public transport and German airports on Sunday. In Würzburg local bus services were paused overnight, but tram services continued. At Cologne-Bonn Airport, services were paused for 45 minutes due to black ice.
